Diesel vehicles have a diesel particulate filter (DPF) fitted to the exhaust and they are a mandatory requirement, introduced to reduce emissions.
Blockages in the DPF
The DPF stores soot produced from your vehicle’s exhaust system, with the collected soot then being burned at a high temperature from either driving at high speed over long distances or by the ECU injecting extra fuel into the exhaust system. These processes are known as passive and active regeneration, and when both processes fail to burn the accumulated soot, the DPF becomes blocked.
